Starting January 1, 2027, we will begin collecting sales tax where required by state and local tax laws. This article explains what’s changing, how it may affect your account, and what to do if your organization is tax-exempt.
What’s changing?
Sales tax may be added to new purchases and subscription renewals processed on or after January 1, 2027. Purchases made before that date are not affected.
How is sales tax calculated?
Whether tax applies, and how much, depends on the tax rules where you’re located. It’s based on the billing address on your account, so we recommend reviewing your billing information before your next renewal to make sure it’s accurate.
Any applicable tax will be shown clearly on your invoice or receipt.
Do I need to do anything?
For most customers, no action is needed. We do recommend:
- Checking that your billing address is up to date
- Reviewing your next renewal date so you know when the change will first apply to you
- Be sure to provide us with your Tax-Exempt certification before making a purchase/renewal.
What if my organization is tax exempt?
Sales tax applies to all individual Educator plans in states where we’re required to collect it. Because these plans are self-serve, we aren’t able to accept tax exemption certificates for them, even if the purchase is being made for a school or district.
Purchasing for a tax-exempt school or district?
Tax exemption is available with our Smore for Teams plan. Team purchases go through our sales team, who can apply your organization’s tax exemption and accept other payment options like purchase orders. To get started, contact our sales team.
